BEING HUMAN
We are embodied beings living in an embodied world. Read the accounts of creation in Genesis, and we not only quickly glimpse the extraordinary diversity of the physical world, but also the repeated declaration that it was good. God didn’t just plonk us in a virtual world, but he brought all matter and energy into being, equipping us with senses (sight, sound, touch, taste, and smell) to experience and interact with the world around us. While other religions and ancient mythologies balked at the idea that the ‘gods’ would be interested in mixing it with the physical realms, the Lord God gets his hands dirty in the dust and breathes life directly into our lungs. It’s no wonder that the Psalmist can cry out, “For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb.” (cf. Psalm 139). Not only did God declare the physical world as ‘good,’ but he himself saw it fit to become human permanently and dwell by his Spirit in his children. How extraordinary that God is not only interested in our minds, hearts, wills, and souls, but he is also interested in our bodies! It’s no wonder that what we do with our bodies matters. Yet, while we were meant to live in dependence on God, Adam and Eve railed against their human limits and sought independence instead. Tragically, our sin doesn’t just affect our own bodies (we experience decay and death), but it continues to affect the world we were set apart to rule. We witness that continued effect in how we feed the over-desires of our bodies (i.e., nurturing longings out of step with God’s plans) and also in how we respond to our bodily limitations. We can struggle with the brokenness of our bodies in so many ways. But, as God made them in the beginning for good, in the end he’ll restore them forever. That’s what Jesus’ resurrection guarantees. The Christian hope is not wafting around in a ‘spiritual’ disembodied realm, but living with God—with all God’s people—in a completely renewed creation forever (cf. Rev. 21).
Meals Team – Help & Support for Our Church Family: Our Meals Team is seeking individuals to help care for others through meals. You can serve by making homemade meals, sending meals through DoorDash or pizza delivery, or delivering meals to families in need. Every role makes a difference! We also want our church family to be aware that this team is here to support you. If you are facing a season of need—after surgery, during illness, following a loss, or while celebrating the birth of a new baby—the Meals Team would love to come alongside you with care and nourishment. If you’re interested in serving or if you have a need, please contact the church office at [email protected].
