A Challenge to Hope in Jesus
1 Thessalonians 4:13-5:11
Death is a tragedy. Past generations kept reminders of death in plain sight. Cemeteries were on the church lawn. Today, we hide our cemeteries and avoid talking about death at all costs. Paul wants the church to think and talk about death. Paul reminds us that waiting with hope means we don’t grieve like the world (1 Thess. 4:13). Paul’s reference to death as “sleeping” was a common euphemism in his day, but his idea of “waking up” is unique to Christianity. We can only wait with hope for our own resurrection because of Jesus’ death and resurrection. Believers turn all of our losses into longings. We long to reunite with loved ones. We long to be with Jesus. We long for eternal life in heaven. We long for righteous judgment. We don’t know the exact day of Christ’s return, but like the pangs of labor, we can see that all the signs point to His return coming soon. We live as if Jesus is coming back today: we’re sober, aware, and alert. We wait with hope by continually turning toward faith and serving in love. Ben Stuart reminds us, “You don’t have to get ready if you stay ready.” We know He’s coming back, so we live like He’s coming back.
Annual Food Drive:
Bring your grocery bag full of non-perishables or a grocery store or gas gift card to the church through November 17. We will be helping families within our church body, our KidsHope program, and in the community and supporting the local food pantries. Please drop them off on the food drive tables by November 17.
Events Team: If you love to plan events and connect with new people, we would love for you to join our team. We plan 3-4 church-wide events each year. Contact Tabitha at [email protected] to join us or with questions.
Meals Needed: Our Crossroads family also extends hospitality by preparing, ordering, and delivering meals. It really helps to have a meal delivered when families adjust to a new routine with a newborn, grieving the loss of a family member, or during a long illness or hospital stay. Sometimes a meal and a visit is just what someone needs. If you want to join this team, please email the church office at [email protected]. We need people to make meals and deliver meals, as well as people who are willing to order and send meals via DoorDash. Thank you so much for caring for our family in such a tangible and generous way.
Worship Night @ Crossroads November 22 from 6-8 pm: Join us for a night of celebrating all God has done, is doing, and will do in our lives, families, community, and church body. This year, on the weekend before Thanksgiving, we will dedicate an evening to high-energy praise and worship and times of gratitude, testimony, and prayer. Culminating our current sermon series celebrating and challenging us in light of Crossroads’ last 30 years of ministry, we anticipate this being a night of encouragement and joy. We would love for you to join us and make this evening a priority for you and your family—all ages are welcome!
Join Our Funeral Team: We seek caring and dedicated volunteers to join our Funeral Team. This team plays a vital role in supporting families during a difficult time by setting up, serving meals, and helping with cleanup after funeral services. If you have a heart for hospitality and want to serve others, we would love to have you as part of this ministry. For more information or to sign up,please contact the church office. Thank you for considering this opportunity to serve!
