BEING HUMAN
What does it mean to be human? Bill Gates once answered, “There are probably as many answers to this question as there are humans alive to answer it.” Popular thought in the Western world suggests that the only true way to answer that question is by looking inward. However, Christianity claims that the only way that we can truly discover what it means to be human—and relax into that reality, making sense of ourselves and our world—is by looking outward to God. Christianity claims that our true identity—of where we’re from, what we’re for, who we are, and where we’re going—is not the product from looking inward to our own story, but by looking outward and seeing our place in God’s story: that we are created, broken, and redeemed. In the accounts of creation in Genesis 1 and 2, we not only see that God is the ultimate author of creation who brought about order in our world, but humans—as the very pinnacle of his creation—were made in his image. Being created in God’s image not only means that we share something of God’s likeness, but that we are to bear God’s likeness as his representatives in the world. Yet while humanity was—and continues to be—entrusted with so much, we see that as humans rejected both the Creator and his commands (that’s at the heart of sin), the effects on the entirety of creation were catastrophic! As creatures reject the creator, it causes disharmony with God, dysfunction in our relationship with others and the world, and even death. But that is not where the story ends! For God in his loving kindness sent his Son into our world, to heal our brokenness through the gift that only he could give: himself! We were captive to sin, death, and decay, but through Jesus, we have been redeemed—we’ve been set free and look forward to the day when all of God’s creation, along with all who trust in him, will be restored.
Meals Team – Help & Support for Our Church Family: Our Meals Team is seeking individuals to help care for others through meals. You can serve by making homemade meals, sending meals through DoorDash or pizza delivery, or delivering meals to families in need. Every role makes a difference! We also want our church family to be aware that this team is here to support you. If you are facing a season of need—after surgery, during illness, following a loss, or while celebrating the birth of a new baby—the Meals Team would love to come alongside you with care and nourishment. If you’re interested in serving or if you have a need, please contact the church office at [email protected].
